South African Ballet Theatre
The independent South African Ballet Theatre company was formed in February 2001 and consists of 32 dancers – the initial members were former dancers of the State Theatre Ballet and Dance companies who were retrenched in June 2000 following the closure of the State Theatre, Pretoria.
These dancers regrouped in September 2000 and were briefly contracted to an independent company in December 2000, performing ‘The Nutcracker’ at the State Theatre, Pretoria and at the Sun City Super Bowl on Christmas Eve where they performed to an audience of 3500 people.

The dancers returned in January of 2001 and, despite no prospect of further funding, were determined to dance and to continue with the struggle to keep ballet and dance alive in South Africa. Six of the dancers combined their talents to become the steering committee of the new company. All the dancers showed tremendous dedication and commitment to their cause – none of them received a salary in January 2001 and they only received a partial salary in February 2001.
