Moving Into Dance Mophatong
The trail-blazing Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) Performance Company was founded in 1978 by Sylvia "Magogo" Glasser as a non-racial dance company and training organisation, during the height of apartheid. Dance was used as a form of cultural resistance to apartheid.  At the basis of all the work was the concept of integration - integration of people as well as the integration of African and Western cultures.  MIDM's signature Afrofusion style was born at this time - a blending of African ritual, music and dance with Western contemporary dance forms.  Afrofusion reflects a respect for African beliefs and values. It is a dynamic style of movement which has become a leading force amongst South Africa's diverse dance aesthetics.

Since 1978 this innovative Performance Company has been presenting a unique, contemporary, cross-cultural dance experience and has been praised internationally for its artistry, vitality and choreographic innovation. This contemporary African dance company has performed to appreciative audiences and critical acclaim locally and throughout Africa, Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada and Malaysia.

As well as the Professional Performance Company MIDM has developed extensive and successful training programmes which are all inter-linked.  Edudance was developed as a response to general school teachers' requests in the 1980's. Edudance uses dance as an interactive teaching tool for school subjects like Mathematics and Science in Primary Schools, and History, Life Skills and Cultural Studies in the Senior Secondary Schools. The need for   professional dance training led to the establishment of the full-time Community Dance Teachers Training Course (CDTTC) in 1992 as well as the Edudance Outreach Programme in schools.  In 1997 the Edudance In-Service Training Programme (INSET), a programme that trains teachers in the Edudance methodology, was introduced.  In 2000 INSET was extended into the rural areas throughout various provinces.  This initiative is known as the Rural Edudance Advisory Project (REAP).

A forerunner in the field of dance education and performance, MIDM empowers youth and adults through interdisciplinary training. The development and nurturing of people has been the foundation of Moving into Dance Mophatong's philosophy. We are Moving into the Future with a commitment to continue to innovate and expand while maintaining the standards, integrity and ideals that define us.
